If you’re like many people, you didn’t have the perfect childhood. Even though most of us had adequate shelter and food, the proverbial roof over our heads, we may have been missing out on other fundamental needs. So often we don’t realize what we’re missing until we’re adults — whether that’s the basics like protection, safety, and comfort, or more complex needs like stability, having our challenges held with compassion, having a sense of belonging and community and inclusion, feeling seen, soothed, appreciated, and cared for. Once people get in touch with these unmet needs from childhood, they can feel a sense of sadness or loss or regret for what they didn’t have. That is completely understandable. And at the same time, it’s no fun going through life wallowing in regrets or self-pity. An emotional resistance to past life events can cause us unhappiness, and many times when you are able to work through those feelings of loss, you come to a place of acceptance and peace.
