Many people with anxious attachment dwell on negative events from the past. They may remember hurtful events in great emotional detail, and have trouble letting go of their feelings around ways that they were hurt. Because the anxious attachment system craves consistent and reliable connection, people can sometimes get into the habit of complaining and focusing on the negative to maintain connection with friends and loved ones. Even when things are going well, they focus on “yes, but”, because the focus on a problem is an attempt to stabilize connection. Consciously or subconsciously, we can have a fear that if things are going too well, other people won’t want to stay with us. This goes back to when we were babies and got more attention when we were crying. In anxious attachment, it’s like this signal cry is stuck on. The anxious attachment system wants stability, even if it means focusing on or even manufacturing a problem to assure connection with someone else. Obviously none of us want to be suffering, and we’d all much rather be happy than unhappy, and sometimes an over-focus on negativity can push others away in our relationships. But at one time, focusing on the negative was an effective strategy for keeping people’s attention. Fortunately, you can find ways to work through your past and let go of the negative energies associated with past events, so you have more energy to focus on positive interactions with yourself and others, meaning that you enjoy your own company and that of others more and more. This session is specially designed to help you let go of negativity around past events so you can focus on what is good in relationships and in your life.
